Lot 36

1797 C-3a R3 Plain Edge. VF-25. The Low Head variety. Sharpness EF45 but there are traces of microscopic roughness on both sides and some dull contact marks on the reverse. The notable marks are a dull dent at the dentils over the left side of the O in OF and another at the dentils over the left edge of the U in UNITED. These dents are strong enough to cause a slight bulge on the opposing obverse rim. The surfaces are frosty chocolate brown and offer decent eye appeal in spite of the marks and minor roughness. No verdigris. LDS, Manley state 3.0. The obverse die crack from the chin is strong. This is the Gilbert plate coin for the variety (G-2) and was plated in the Stack's fixed price list offering the famous Brobston collection in 1963. A very sharp, well detailed example of the Low Head variety, one of the sharpest known. Weight 85.7 grains. Comes with an impressive provenance.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.
