Lot 4877

1929 $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Light orange toning on both sides. Well struck and choicefor the grade. The 1928 $20 was stored in large quantities (mainly overseas) and so is common. In fact, it is the last common date in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles. 1929 begins the division comprising the scarce to rare dates, again this is believed to be due to extensive melting in the 1930s. Every issue from 1929 through 1933 is either a rarity or a major rarity. Typical of this date, there is a very sharp strike and the fields and devices are fully lustrous with bright frosty surfaces. The quality, with the color and surface freshness, creates quite a good amount of eye appeal. The example on offer has all of the design detail sharp and delineated, without the random minor softness sometimes noted on portions of the Capitol dome near the hem of Liberty's flowing gown. The frosty nature unfolds not into the typical mélange of ancient colors but simply into light gold and reddish gold hues with all surfaces well preserved. We note a few marks in the fields and on the eagle but nothing even coming close to significance. All in all, this is a very appealing MS64 specimen. Current PCGS census: Pop 92; 27 finer; 22 in 65; 5 in 66. (PCGS # 9190) .
Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000.

Realized $49,450
