Lot 4668

1846-D/D $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. Well struck and ablaze with shimmering mint luster. All is enhanced by the lovely golden-yellow mint color. A Premium Quality coin for the grade. Pop 7; 4 finer, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 8229) .

This variety has a very sharply doubled mintmark, and is in demand from those who are intrigued by similar die blunders among all denominations. The D/D variety is more plentiful than the perfect mintmark, although the latter is not nearly as interesting.
Large D mintmark is sharply doubled with the initial impression much too high and buried beneath the branch stem. The final impression is in the appropriate position with the result that this second punch overlaps the bottom third of the initial punch.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Realized $10,350
