Lot 4659

1836 $5 Classic Head. PCGS graded MS-63. Choice and frosty, with delicate toning. This head style has the first curl, at upper left, much smaller than previous styles. In comparing the various dates, Liberty's head is slightly smaller than before. This was the final modification prepared by William Kneass (who had suffered a stroke the year before), with Christian Gobrecht taking over the job of die preparation the next year.

The Classic Head quarter eagles of 1834-39 are popular to collect by date since all are relatively affordable. Those in choice Mint State, however, are in another class altogether. When a lovely MS63 like this presents itself, a specimen whose deeply lustrous, subtle medium yellow gold color attracts notice, bidders respond. The strike detail, we should add, is crisp around the borders, and also so at the centers, this being noteworthy. No tarnish areas or deep abrasions. In summation, this is one of the choicest appearing 1836 quarter eagles available presently. It will stand up well in a specialist's collection. Further, it would make a fine addition to a choice gold Type Set (PCGS # 8174) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.
