1838 Pattern Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Restrike. PCGS graded Proof 63. Judd-84. Silver Reeded Edge Rarity 5. Lovely gold, blue and rose colors. Boldly struck. A naturally toned and razor-sharp coin; not even a hint of weakness is evident on the stars or the central devices. Even the foremost critic of early 19th century U.S. coinage will find nothing to fault here! The opposite may actually happen and this coin will be fawned over by collectors from Maine to California. For instance, the dappled toning is its most distinguishing feature, with balanced hues that are evident on both sides, the reverse having a few areas of more saturated (and iridescent) shades than the obverse. There are a few light hairlines in the fields. The fields exhibit still-reflective Proof surfaces. Overall, an notable coin with sterling eye appeal.

The comparison with the few other Gobrecht Dollar issues sold in recent times is easy to make: 1838-dated Dollars (without official mintage figures in the Archival register) are significantly more difficult to locate than either the 1836 or the 1839 issues (the latter with a meager official coinage total of just 300). Easily, the 1838 issue is extremely rare when compared with the other dates in the series. Some have made the comparison to the 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollars, suggesting that the 1838 Gobrecht is rarer. A valid case can be made for this comparison. The 1838 Dollar we are pleased to present in this lot should be an attractive and, to repeat, a very rare coin, that will stand as the centerpiece in any expert's collection. Pop 14; 7 in PF64; 1 in PF65. (PCGS # 11352) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.
