Lot 1973

1801 Draped Bust Half Dime. . V-1, LM-2. PCGS graded VF-20. Nice even toning on both sides, some areas of the design weaker than others as often seen on this rare early draped bust, heraldic eagle Type (issued 1800-05 only). The dies that are known as LM-2 were once described by Valentine as both V-1 and V-2. Research points to the obverse die having suffered damage from the rim outside the Y in LIBERTY, through that letter, and into the field inside stars 8-13. It is thought this is die state that Valentine described as V-1. Mint employees then re-lapped the obverse die to obliterate this damage, a process that also reduced the size of the aforesaid stars. (The obverse suffered more extensive damage towards its end in the form of a semicircular bisecting crack from the rim below the 8 in the date to the rim above the B in LIBERTY.) Very scarce: only 27,760 minted (PCGS # 4267) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

Realized $2,875
