Lot 1736

1878-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Rich golden toning on both sides. Light bagmarks on the obverse (cheek, nose and field before the face). But these are easily overlooked. Late in the 1870s the Mint ramped up production of gold as the economy stabilized after the inflationary fiat-money period (1861-77) ended. Of the approximately 1.8 million 1878-S $20 gold pieces minted, most are in circulated grades (those that weren't melted). Choice examples, as the following census shows, are in the scarce category. Pop 64; 7 in 63; 2 in 64 (PCGS # 8987) .
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,500.

Realized $4,140
