Lot 942

1865 Indian Head Cent. Plain 5. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is a well struck example of this final Civil War date. The date is the Plain 5 style, which is slightly scarcer than the Fancy 5 logotype. The color is a moderately bright gold. There is a small contact mark to the right of the date and a tiny speck by the A in AMERICA.

This date is common in average grades due to its high mintage, but gem full red examples are very difficult to locate. A quick look at the PCGS population shows it to be scarcer in this grade than much overall scarcer dates. Only 10 examples are presently graded with 2 higher. Granted, PCGS did not always denote the different logotypes on their holders so some of the 40 pieces listed under the 1865 Fancy 5 may be Plain 5 pieces. Still it is in fact a very difficult coin to locate. Pop 10; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 92084) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,800.
Ex:The "Chiro" Collection. Eagle Eye Photo Seal accompanies this lot.
