Lot 2476

1910 $10 Indian. NGC graded Proof 63. A choice satin finish Matte Proof. Lightly toned with a few faint hairlines. This is a lovely, healthy-glowing choice example of the Indian style eagle in Proof, a coin whose golden full-color obverse and reverse brings smiles to the viewer's face, the coin beams with smooth satin-finish luster. Regarding this date, all the details are razor-sharp: throughout the peripheral areas, and also encompassing the key centers of Liberty and eagle, which are crystal clear as depicted in the photographs. All so-called Matte Proofs were struck on the Mint's hydraulic medal press and then given one of several varying steps of sandblast finish.

The "Roman" finish on 1910, halfway between matte and mirrored, was probably developed to end complaints about the dark dull color of the 1908 Indian $10 Proofs. (The name "Roman" for this satiny finish dates back to the 1950s or earlier, and alludes to an accidental resemblance between this surface and that on some rare F.D.C. "fleur 'd coin" Roman aureii.) Their lighter color is very beautiful. Only 204 Proofs struck. Pop 3; 22 finer. (PCGS # 8892) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.

Realized $20,125
