Lot 1992

1926 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. In PCGS holder 10416047. Spectacular gem! Superb multi-color toning on both sides. Monster color! A satiny superb gem with strong underlying luster from the dies that reinforce the beauty of the toning. Substantial detail to the highpoints on this fine example further expresses the astounding quality found on either side, with full definition (despite the lightly impressed die-design) on the dual portraits of Washington and Coolidge as well as for the Liberty bell.

Struck for sale at the Sesquicentennial Exposition held in Philadelphia June 1 to November 30, 1926. The obverse has conjoined busts of Washington and Calvin Coolidge, president at the time. Although it was then against policy to depict a living person on a United States coin (and still is, in spite of several recent lapses in following the law), this was overlooked when the president was given the shared spotlight with America's first chief executive. For the reverse, designer John R. Sinnock used the Liberty bell. This was the identical motif he would employ 22 years later when he composed the Franklin Half Dollar. Net mintage was 140,592, the issue price being $1. The Sesquicentennial coins, similar to many other commemorative issues, had also a corresponding U.S. stamp issued for the event. Gems are rare. Superb gems, decidedly so. And superb gems with gorgeous toning almost unheard-of! (PCGS # 9374) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 19,000.

Realized $13,800
