Lot 1659

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Well struck and mostly untoned with a hint of light golden toning. Very choice for the grade. The 1879-CC is the scarcest of the 1878-85 Carson City Mint dates in the Morgan dollar series. There were 756,000 coins delivered, and the sales conducted by the General Services Administration in the early 1970s resulted in the dispersal of 4,123 of these. The GSA pieces, like most other extant '79-CC Dollars at the Mint State level, graded predominantly MS60 to 62. On the other hand, the outstanding coin that we are offering here is more than smooth enough to justify the MS64 grade. Thick, bright mint frost spreads over the surface on both sides and thins to modest reflectivity in the fields. The strike is nicely sharp for the type, and the otherwise heavy white highlights yield to a swath of shimmering iridescence within the eagle's feathers and Liberty's broad facial profile. There are no deep bagmarks. Pop 645; 78 in 65. (PCGS # 7086) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,500.

Realized $9,660
