1910 Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Well struck. The fiery-gold color is especially vibrant on this handsome, well-made Proof of the early period. Clockwork precision seen in the strike on the portrait features, Lincoln's hair and coat, as well as sharp relief on both wheat ears. Matte Proofs were struck in 1909-16. The types of coin designs in this period (Lincoln cent, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, etc.) did not permit the making of bright finish or brilliant Proof specimens. It seems that the face of the die touches almost every part of the planchet on the Victor D. Brenner cents, dulling the surface of even a polished blank. Proof coins of the series therefore were issued with a matte or sandblast finish. It wasn't until the 1930s that the mind developed a technique (still problematic) of creating polished mirror Proofs. A rare opportunity to acquire a fresh, nearly full red Gem of 1910. Pop 70; 60 finer. (PCGS # 3307) .
