Lot 3157

1892 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. A nice white coin. Bright and lustrous pale yellow gold with some deeper accents in the sheltered regions within the devices. A high quality quarter eagle from the second year of Charlotte Mint coinage operations, and the last of two years in which the obverse mintmark is placed on the obverse; the mintmark was moved to the reverse of the denomination in 1840 with the introduction of Gobrecht's coronet head of Liberty, where it remained through the end of the denomination in 1929. Most 1839-C quarter eagles show some recutting at the 9, with some arguing for a 9/8 overdate and others pointing to 9/9 as the true variety. Winter lists both varieties in his comprehensive tome on the series. Regardless of its variety attribution, we are met with a lively and lustrous Mint State example of one of the most desirable of all Classic Head branch mint gold issues. The slightly increased total of 1,245 Proofs minted is attributed to the introduction of the Barber coins this year, occasioning sales to one-time buyers. Pop 8; 2 finer in 68. (PCGS # 87327) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Realized $7,475
