Lot 2819

1863 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Old green holder. Lovely shades of rainbow toning. Over 460 proofs struck. Pop 3 8 finer; 7 in 66; 1 in 67. The fully original example we now present bidders beats (from a technical angle) practically all of the 1863 Proof seated Liberty silver dollars that have passed through the various grading services. It has all of the distinctive appearance that collectors could ask for, including sharp relief, full mirrored fields (no lifelessness as on lesser coins), and charismatic shades of color over both sides. With the Civil War then in its third year, leisure activity like coin collecting fell to a low point in 1863-64. As the mintage reveals, only a small number of Proof sets were bought by collectors in 1863. The intervening 123 years has often been harsh on those seated Liberty dollars that survive. But this specimen, which retains full Gem quality surfaces, stands at the forefront (PCGS # 7006) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Realized $15,525
