Lot 2818

1861 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. A hint of light golden and russet toning. Well struck. Only 1000 struck in proof. Completely original with attractive mint brilliance over pulsating light misty white contrasting devices. This is not a typical 1861 Proof which often lacks the finer points of the design and suffers dullness in the fields. The exact opposite: it is fresh appearing, in the sense of uncleaned surfaces, and has the right sparkle and dancing glow that collectors prefer. Although 1,000 Proof 1861 Liberty Seated silver dollars were minted, it is believed that only about 350 were ever sold. Of issues dated in the early 1860s, the 1861 is the rarest Proof today. Single Proof dollars cost $1.60 each at the Mint. (Those were the days!) Pop 22; 8 finer; 5 in 65; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7004) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Realized $7,763
