1926-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63 P.Q. Frost golden toned coin. a scarce date. Among Saint-Gaudens double eagles the 1926-D is a key date, and among the more elusive of its decade. The present piece is warm with orange-gold brilliance. It displays fresh luster, save for just some of the higher areas where minor coin to coin contact at banks inhibited a higher grade. All told it is very attractive, and it compares favorably with some that have been called Mint State 64.

In the circumstance of the 1920s the production figure for the 1926-D was not as large as some branch mint years: 481,000 pieces. It is likely that of these, most remained undistributed at the Treasury, perhaps 1,000 or so made it out into circulation. Today, the number known is likely to be in the range of 400 or 500 pieces, making it a rarity. Years ago, just a few were traced and they rarely showed up in auctions. That being the case, this handsome MS64 should be a watershed event. Pop 34; 15 in 64; 5 in 65; 2 in 66. (PCGS # 9184) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 33,000.

Realized $36,800
