1885 Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 67. Old green holder. Lovely even toning. The 1885 is the key to this series. Only 1.47 million pieces were minted. Even though the public was aware of design alteration from the shield nickel in 1883, and speculator profits (as with the 1883 No Cents nickels), it would seem the scarcity of 1885 Liberty nickels did not inspire collectors to look for high grade pieces to be set aside in any appreciable numbers. This dazzling brilliant-gray coin shows lovely toned mirror-smooth surfaces, and the strike on the main design is perfect: bold in even the tiniest crevice of Liberty's hair and within the ears of corn. Superb! Only 3,790 Proof coins minted. Pop 15; 1 finer in 68. (PCGS # 3883) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,800.

Realized $4,140
