Lot 1041

1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze. PCGS graded Proof 66 Red & Brown. Comes with the "Eagle Eye" photo seal and certificate. A lovely light wood-brain finish Red Brown Proof. 150+ struck. Pop 14; 1 finer in 67.

To aid the Mint in coining large numbers of the new bronze coins beginning in 1864, a private company received a contract to prepare blanks for the bronze coinage. With this help, the Mint was able to strike nearly 60 million coins in the last seven months of 1864. The small coin shortage was over. Only a few bronze Proof Indian cents were struck bearing the date 1864, since most of the coinage had already taken place early in the year using the copper-nickel format (PCGS # 2277) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,800.

Realized $3,565
