Lot 999

1881 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo. Nice light golden toning. Low mintage of 51 proofs struck. The 1881 quarter eagle is a key and rare issue in both Proof and in business strike format with a mere 51 Proofs recorded plus the 640 business strikes. A reliable guesstimate of the number of Proof survivors is somewhere south of 30 pieces, possibly only 24-28 pieces. This piece has smooth, watery surfaces on each side, with the deeply reflective mirrors shining brightly as they support heavy golden frosted devices, the subject of the "deep cameo" comment on the PCGS grading tag. Such considerable mint frost on the devices gives the coin a noticeable appearance that collectors love to crow about when they own one. As might inferred from the grade, this piece has a few light wispy hairlines but none that are prominent. PCGS graded only 2 in DCAM. Pop 1; none finer in Deep Cameo. (PCGS # 97907) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.

Realized $18,400
