Lot 1916

1902-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely gold and light blue toning. Semi reflective surfaces. In stark contrast to the typically offered 1902-S silver dollar, this frosty Gem is relatively free of grade-diminishing bagmarks. The central obverse is a tad softly defined, but the balance of the features are nicely struck. The centers present a soft satiny appearance within a thin overlay of toning iridescence.

The San Francisco Mint's delivery of Morgan dollars in 1902 amounted to 1.5 million pieces. This total is on the minimal side for a mass-produced series, and the '02-S is scarce in both worn as well as Gem Mint State grades. Hoard coins at the San Francisco Mint and in the Redfield Estate explain the relatively availability of lower quality Uncirculated examples, with most Redfield pieces dipped-white in color (PCGS # 7282) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,000.

Realized $1,783
