Lot 1824

1884-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Well struck with semi prooflike surfaces. Nice golden toning on both sides. Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, with only marginal softness found at hair above the ear on this choice toned example of the scarce '84-S dollar. Pop 86; 36 in 63; 13 in 64; 1 in 65; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7156) .

In spite of its mintage, this issue has long been celebrated for its paucity of coins in Mint State. With 3.2 millions struck, it would be thought that a bag or two might have been reported, but that is not the case. The total quantity of Uncirculated specimens graded by PCGS and NGC is several hundred coins at all levels, not several thousand but several hundred, that is all! Morgan dollars collectors have a enormous influence on the pricing scale with this year, but with tens of thousands of eager buyers in the hunt for Mint State examples for specialized collections, most come up empty-handed.
Estimated Value $17,000 - 19,000.

Realized $21,850
