Lot 2110

1921 Morgan Dollar. Zerbe. PCGS graded Proof 65. Old green holder. Lovely shades of violet and light gold toning. Well struck. Pop 14; 7 in 66 (PCGS # 7341) .

The origin of the Zerbe Proof Morgan Dollars can be found in the Mint's failure to place the new Peace Dollar into circulation before the end of 1921. The American Numismatic Association, and in particular Farran Zerbe, was the leading proponent of a new dollar coin commemorating the Peace Treaty of 1918. Despite Zerbe's prodding, however, he was unable to accelerate the production and release of the first examples of the new Peace Dollar. To conciliate the Zerbe, the Mint agreed to strike a limited number of "Proof" 1921 Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints for distribution to (and through) his auspices.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
The Kazpar Collection.

Realized $13,800
