Lot 1852

1800 Draped Bust Dollar. "AMERICAI". PCGS graded EF-45 BB-192, B-19. Nice even grey toning, dappled across the obverse in shades of deep antique gray to lighter shades of silver (PCGS # 6892) .

This reverse die is immediately recognizable by the plain die line following AMERICA -- seemingly reading AMERICAI, hence the coin's nickname. Perhaps this was the result of an errant die scratch from the engraver, or perhaps the engraver started punching the final A in AMERICA too far to one side and then corrected his mistake before completing the letter. In any event, the result is a noticeable and popular error with collectors.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Realized $6,613
