Lot 889

1852-D $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Numismatic scholar Walter Breen says of half eagles of this date and mint that they are "always weak in the centers." This pleasant specimen is only slightly softly struck in a few of the curls above the ear and on the upper part of the shield and eagle on the reverse, yet the balance of the design is well struck for the issue. The color is a warm honey gold and the surfaces are very clean for a coin which is often seen quite baggy.

Breen-6600, "extremely rare Uncirculated." The October 1999 auction of the Harry Bass collection only had an MS-61 as the highest graded mint state example. The present offering of an MS-63 is an unusual opportunity for the specialist to acquire an important rarity is the highest grade certified to date. The population is only 2 specimens, with none graded higher by either PCGS or NGC. (PCGS # 8252) .
Estimated Value $21,000 - 23,000.

Realized $20,700
