Lot 2499

1882-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Warm rose gold coloration over semi-reflective fields and hints of a rich orange toning at the peripheries. Well struck with full hair detail. The reverse is a little bit more choppy than the obverse, most notably by a scuff underneath IC of AMERICA and another vertically right of the shield. The 1880-1882 San Francisco double eagles frequently come with semi-reflective fields and this leads to them generally appearing a little more abraded. Regardless of the more visible abrasions, collectors prefer to acquire these issues with proof-like qualities. The 1882-S is about twice as rare as the 1880-S and 1881-S in terms of overall rarity but in high grades it is still extremely rare, almost never seen above MS62. This pleasing example should receive very healthy bidding from double eagle enthusiasts. PCGS population of 167 in MS-62, 9 in MS-63 and a single MS-64 as finest (PCGS # 8998) .
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000.

Realized $2,013
