Lot 2467

1850 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. A near mint state example of this first collectible year of issue of the Type I double eagle series (the 1849 being the first year of issue but also not collectible by really any means) The obverse surfaces are semi-prooflike and display a mixture of light hairlines and original die polish lines. The light greenish-gold coloration is pleasing and enhanced by the reflectivity of the fields. Liberty's device is boldly struck with all hair detail and lettering sharp. A small circular nick is noted on the upper cheek and there is a short tick mark in the field right of star 6. The reverse is extremely lustrous and unquestionably uncirculated in condition. A heavily frosty texture is seen over the fields and devices. There is a small patch of planchet roughness above the D. of TWENTY D. An extremely attractive example of this always popular Type I issue! Housed in an old PCGS green label holder. PCGS population of 53 in AU-55. Only 18 have been graded AU-58 by PCGS and only 45 in all uncirculated grades (PCGS # 8902) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Realized $4,370
