Lot 2451

1916-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and possessing luster far exceeding that normally found on hoard examples of this date. The coloration is a rich orangish gold on both sides and the obverse displays a russet toned film. Closer inspection with a loupe reveals that this film is most likely original and does not mask any disturbing scratches or marks. The surfaces are finely granular with the tips of the feathers quite frosty. Two short tick marks on the eagle's breast and one in the rear portion of the wing are the only serious marks to mention on the reverse. A lustrous and choice example of this San Francisco eagle! A mintage of 138,500 pieces is recorded for this date and the dispersal of several hoards greatly helped to make this one of the most common eagles from the San Francisco Mint. PCGS population of 58 in MS-63 with only 39 finer (PCGS # 8880) .
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,000.

Realized $3,565
