1911-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. The 1911-S $10 is a rare and undervalued issue and at today's levels, choice examples should be acquired whenever the opportunity arises. Only 51,000 pieces were produced and both the overall and high grade survival rate is low. Most of the existing population of uncirculated examples came from a hoard discovered in Europe in the 1970's and subsequently dispersed. David Aker's, in his book on the subject of 20th Century gold stated, "Until the discovery of the aforementioned hoard, which amounted to approximately 40 to 50 pieces, the 1911-S was virtually impossible to find in Mint State". The present example has the characteristics that Akers documented for coins from that hoard. The surfaces are finely granular and frosty with the original skin intact. The coloration is orange gold with patches of steel highlights and accompanied by excellent luster. A small patch of roughness is noted left of the date. The serious gold collector will appreciate the originality and eye appeal of this choice specimen. Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder. PCGS population of 17 with only 65 finer (PCGS # 8870) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,000.
