Lot 2334

1854-S $10 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50 PQ. The first year of issue of eagles from the San Francisco Mint and always popular with collectors due to this status. The 1854-S, according to population statistics, should be a readily available coin in XF/AU but for some reason finding a nice example can be a challenge when one is needed. This is not to say that AU examples are not available, it just might take longer than one thinks. In grades above AU-50 - 53, the 1854-S is quite tough and seriously undervalued. The present example is one of the finer examples this cataloguer has seen in quite some time. First off, the coin has eye appeal that is almost never seen on this issue. The strike is strong, the surfaces and luster are intact, original frost still exists and the fields are slightly reflective. The surfaces are unabraded and have only light hairlines. A small dash is seen above a dentil directly below the 18 of date. A die crack is seen extending from the rim through M of AMERICA. The mintmark is large and centered above the space between N and D. A rare coin and one that should be reviewed diligently

We note that in Part III of Bowers & Merena's presentation of the Harry Bass, Jr. Collection there was a raw 1854-S Medium Date eagle in a similar grade (Lot #628) that realized $4,600 (PCGS # 8615) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
The Michael M. Magdic Collection.
