$2.50 Gold Indian. 1911. PCGS graded Proof 67. Shimmering dark matte surfaces have the appearance of glittering sand and truly capture the beauty that the U.S. Mint wanted to showcase with these Matte Proof and Roman Proof Indian quarter eagles. While circulation strikes from the entire $2.50 Indian Head Series are obtainable with relative ease, the Proof strikings from 1908-1915 are the real rarities! Only 1,827 proofs were struck for all the years from 1908-1915 and a large number were melted in 1916 due to lack of demand from the U.S. collecting public, which at the time favored the brilliant proofs formerly struck by the U.S. Mint. In 1911, only 191 proofs were struck and you are looking at one of the Finest known to survive. The luster is subdued and rather than thick and flowing, it is a slight and shifting glittering of gold. Identified by a small lint mark from the second star towards the middle of the neck (mint made). PCGS has graded only 15 in this formidable grade with not a single example finer. Truly magnificent! (PCGS # 7960) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 22,000.
