Lot 2200

1905 Lewis and Clark Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66 Premium Quality. This is one of the key dates to this short Commemorative gold series, few were saved in high grades. Even in the 1940s, this date and issue was the most expensive in the series (aside from the $50 pieces). Blazing luster in the fields, and boldly struck by the dies. All lettering and devices are sharp, with the only exception the dentils which surround the periphery, and these show areas of normal mushiness in the strike. Rich orange gold toning on both sides. PCGS has graded 44 this high, and importantly only 3 have been graded higher. A coin worthy of a connoisseurs collection. This is the finest example of this issue that we have ever seen (PCGS # 7448) .
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
From the Benson collection and purchased from Ira S. Reed on February 26, 1944 for $20.

Realized $18,400
