Lot 287

1918-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-62. This pair of dies were pushing the limits of the dismal department, the surfaces of the dies were very rough, and the strike generated by them was rather mushy. Nevertheless, this is how it was made, as the mints tried to lengthen die life by reducing the striking pressure, coins like this are the result. As Breen states "often weak", to which we must agree.
Estimated Value $500 - 700.
From the Benson Collection and purchased on October 3, 1944 from Ira S. Reed in a set of nickels from 1913 to 1938 for $350.00.

Realized $633
