Lot 428

1795 C-5a R3 No Pole, Thin Planchet EF45. Frosty light to medium steel brown and olive with subtle overtones of light bluish steel in the fields and protected areas. The only marks are a small patch of tiny planchet chips between the tops of the I & T in UNITED to the dentils above and a very faint hairline over the H in HALF. There are numerous microscopic planchet chips scattered over both sides, especially inside the wreath, all as struck. LDS with a strong die crack slanting above HALF and a lighter die crack from the leaf over HA to the top of the L (Breen's die state II). The details inside the wreath were softly struck; HALF is weak but readable and CENT is nearly gone. Everything else is complete and clear. An attractive example that comes with a great provenance. Weight 79.9 grains (PCGS # 35083) Value $4,500 - UP
