Lot 34

1796 S-92 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Lustrous light olive and steel with subtle overtones of light bluish steel in the fields and protected areas. Satiny mint frost covers the fields on both sides and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks, and they are insignificant, are a small spot of slightly darker toning in the center of the cheek, a few microscopic planchet flakes or chips in the field left of the hair ribbon, and a spot of reddish toning between the N & E in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with several very fine die cracks on the obverse and die clashmarks on both sides. In addition there is a strong double profile on the forelock, forehead, and nose (from die bounce or shift during striking, often called "machine doubling"). Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20324. Bland says MS60 and CC#2 in his census. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65. (PCGS # 35813) Value $25,000 - UP
Discovered in a private collection in Europe by William P. (Billy) Paul (American Heritage Minting) 10/21/1987-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
