Lot 1622

1875-S/CC. PCGS graded MS-64. Very clear S over CC. A frosty white coin with a solid strike and amazing surfaces. This is a major variety that has long been recognized by PCGS. Hence collector demand has always been high for one of these rarities. It is clear from the reverse die that the CC mintmark was put onto this die, then somewhat effaced, and replaced with an S for San Francisco. Why this was done is not known, especially given that Trade dollars were struck at both these branch mints in 1875. This example is one of the finest known of this prized over mintmark, nudged out by a single coin at the full gem level. Pop 8; 1 in 65; (PCGS # 7040) Estimate Value $18,000 - 20,000
