Lot 980

1855-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. Well struck for this "C" mint. Lightly toned and decidedly lustrous. Only 3,677 minted. Struck with indifferent care by the dies in the outer margins and on most legends, with portions of the inner design were left weak by the imprint of the dies as well, this is typical for 1855 Charlotte coinage.

Now known as The Mint Museum of Art, the structure which once housed the United States Branch Mint at Charlotte, North Carolina has been relocated since its days in government service. Quarter eagles were struck at the facility between 1839 and 1860. When South Carolina seceded from the union in December 1860, all firestorm of misery broke loose and the mint was forced to close permanently. Pop 3; 2 in 62; 1 in 63; 1 in 64. (PCGS # 7775) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Realized $20,700
