Lot 979

1854-D $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. Well struck and lightly toned. Some light hairlibnes in the left obverse fields otherwise this coin. Should grade a few points higher. An attractive specimen that surely ranks as one of the scarcest D-mint issues in the series. In fact, this probably could be called 3 or 5 points higher without fear of contradiction. Douglas Winter notes that only two Mint State coins are known to him. Only 1,760 minted. Pop 8; 14 finer. (PCGS # 7771) .

On the 1854-D, the date is deeply impressed into working die. Positioned high and touching the truncation, many raised die lines are seen around the border, and lumps and irregularities are observed between stars 8 and 9, near star 10, and between stars 11 and 12. Such attributes, variations of which exist on other dies, make Dahlonega coins fascinating to collect. On the reverse, part of the mintmark overlaps the tail feather. This same die was employed earlier in 1852 and 1853.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Realized $10,350
