Lot 942

1831 Classic Head Half Cent. Restrike. Large berries. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown Reverse of 1836. The obverse is slightly faded mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints, about 80% of the mint color remaining. The reverse is predominately light steel brown faded down from mint red with delicate overtones of light bluish steel, 20% of the very faded mint red remaining. There are some microscopic hairlines in the obverse fields, but they are still reflective. The proof mirrors are deepest on the obverse, as always with this series of restrike proofs. The only marks other than the barely visible hairlines are a small carbon spot at the dentils above star 8, another hidden on star 3, and a small splash of darker brown toning at the right foot of the N in CENT. Early die state, Breen state I, without any reverse die cracks. Excellent eye appeal in spite of the minor defects. EAC grade Proof-62+, close to Proof-63. Pop 1; 3 finer in 65. (PCGS # 1190) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.
