Berlioz, Hector -- ALS Re "Mass of the Dead" Composed for General Charles-Marie, Comte Denys de Damrémont. (1803 - 1869) French composer. Autograph letter signed "H. Berlioz," one page, 7¾ x 6½", in French, n.p., December 29, 1838. To an unidentified person, saying he is sending six copies of his Mass of the Dead (not present) which he composed for the funeral service of General Damrémort [who was killed in the Revolution of 1830]. He is also attaching the invoice. Light toning; small paper loss at upper right corner, affecting nothing.

In 1837, Berlioz was asked by Adrien de Gasparin, Minister of the Interior of France, to compose a Requiem Mass to remember soldiers who died in the Revolution of July 1830.The premiere was conducted by François Habeneck on December 5, 1837 in commemoration of General Damrémont and the soldiers killed in the Siege of Constantine. General Charles-Marie, comte Denys de Damrémont (1783-1837) was a Lieutenant General in the French infantry. At the time of his death at the Siege of Constantine, he was Governor-General of Algeria. Numerous streets and squares throughout France are named in his honor. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
