Lot 90

1846 N-25 Tall Date, Repunched 1 PCGS graded AU55. Glossy mix of medium chocolate and light olive brown with traces of frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas. This cent was lightly cleaned long ago and has retoned nicely over the years. No significant marks or other defects. A small nick on the rim over the right side of the F in OF is a good identifying mark. MDS, die state b. Crumbling joins several dentils under the stem tip but the tops of CE are not joined by crumbling. The horizontal line through the middle of the 1 is clear. Called VF30 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31209. Our grade is VF30, CC#3 in the Grellman census. The next best example in both census lists grades only F15, so the pool of nice ones is extremely limited. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimated Value $1,500-UP

Ex Robert E. Vail (who purchased it unattributed from an unrecorded source at the 1985 EAC Convention) 4/1991 (via J. R. Grellman)-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/7/2009:743-Fred Iskra Collection (includes the Vail collection envelope and Naftzger lot ticket).
