Lot 896

1799/8. 13 Stars on Reverse. B-1, BB-142, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-63. This is an amazing example of the ever popular Draped Bust dollar, amazing for the choice mint state grade! Although a considerable number of these were coined from 1794 through 1803, only a modest number now exist. Of course the vast majority are in well circulated grades and finding a nice EF or AU coin can be a challenge for most collectors. So when this stunning Mint State 63 appears at auction, it is truly something quite special. The obverse is a classic frosty white with ample luster to please the eye and just a few traces of toning while the reverse shows deeper russet around the rims with the centers and fields bright and flashy.

The obverse is quite interesting as it shows one of the popular overdates, with the final 9 being punched over an existing 8, both are clear with a loupe. The reverse shows a few die cracks at the top, crossing along STATES and into the clouds below. A heavier die failure is noted at the I of AMERICA, and this area shows signficant die sinking, likely from defective die steel that literally sunk down in this location as more coins were struck. Nearly all the surviving coins from this die show this feature. This piece is undoubtedly one of the finest for the variety and for this popular and highly collectible overdate. Pop 1; 1 finer in 64 for the variety at NGC. Estimated Value $30,000 - UP
