Lot 890

1797. 9 stars left, 7 right, large letters. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. A frosty coin with light variegated gray and gold toning on both sides. The strike is typical for this issue, but the fields glow with mint luster and frost, and the devices show only a trace of wear on the uppermost portions. Incredible quality for this early Draped Bust, Small Eagle silver dollar, which is seldom found as nice as EF in condition, this near Mint example is extraordinary in its preservation and lack of circulation. Virtually unobtainable finer for this variety. The obverse shows the total of 16 stars, representing the states in the union at that time, with nine stars left, and seven to the right. The reverse has the small, delicate eagle perched on a cloud cluster, surrounded by a laurel branch and palm branch forming an open wreath. These designs are most elegant and attractive when found so well preserved. Only 7,776 struck. Pop 7; 4 finer, 1 in 58+, 1 in 61, 1 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 6863) Estimated Value $24,000 - UP
