Lot 88

1846 N-21 R5+ Small Date PCGS graded AU55. Frosty light reddish chocolate brown and olive. The toning on the obverse shows a very subtle woodgrained effect. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a tiny diagonal nick under the right corner of the eye and a small nearly vertical struck-through line right of star 13. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a, with a faint die crack through the 846 and many of the stars. Our grade is AU50, CC#5 for this very rare die variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 65 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,000-UP

Ex Heritage Auctions 1/8/2008:223-Fred Iskra Collection (lot ticket included).
