Lot 86

1817 N-17 R4 PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Beautiful glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty cartwheel luster shows in the protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal in spite of some tiny contact marks on otherwise smooth surfaces. The best identifying marks are a small nick on the front edge of the neck and a dull, narrow scrape on the neck under this nick. Not quite perfect but still a very important example of this tough die variety. MDS. Die cracks have raised the right arm of the first T in STATES toward the rim but the crack up from that E to the dentils above has not formed. Called EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#2 honors among the confirmed examples in the Noyes census, his photo #25240. Del Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#2 honors among the confirmed examples in his census. Our grade is EF40. A great cent that comes from a long line of distinguished collectors. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #36595. Pop 2; 3 graded higher at PCGS for the variety, 2 in 55, 1 in 58. Estimated Value $6,500 - UP
