Lot 849

1848 N-31 R3. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on the devices, more than a third of the original mint color remaining. This cent offers great eye appeal and the surfaces are nearly flawless. The notable marks are a tiny struck-through line on the cheek right of the mouth (as struck) and a small nick over the E in CENT, and neither mark is visible to the unaided eye. MDS, die state c, with two dentils fused by crumbling over the R in AMERICA and extensive sinking around the legend outside the wreath. This cent is graded MS65 by Del Bland. Our grade is MS64+, tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only example graded by PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 406522) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Kenneth Goldman-Denis Loring (from his date set)-Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/1988:619 (lot ticket included)-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
