Lot 836

1921-D. PCGS graded MS-64+. CAC. PQ. This is the key date to the Walking Liberty half dollar series with a modest mintage of 208,000 pieces in all. From this challenging start, most entered circulation and stayed there long enough to be well into low grades, if they survived the melting pots at all. Here is one of the precious few, and we do mean that--that survived in near gem condition! The obverse and reverse are bathed in creamy white luster, with a better than average strike too, right down to Liberty's thumb that caressess her bundle of oak and laurel branches. The wide open fields are mint fresh and free of all but minute signs of contact, quite an event for this series.

The mintage plunged for many coins in 1921, as the American economy suffered from a short, swift downtrend as the production of war goods (1914-1918) came to an end, soldiers and supporting staff returned home from the war, and production had to shift from war planes, tanks and guns back to peace time production of new fangled cars and tractors for the fields. As the economy shrank and shifted, demand for coinage fell, particularly in 1921 and into 1922. Soon the economy got back on its feet, and the roaring 20s was in full swing a short time after this 1921-D half dollar was struck and carefully preserved to this day. Mostly untoned and frosty. Popular key date. Pop 13; 42 finer, 35 in 65, 4 in 65+, 3 in 66. (PCGS # 6584) Estimated Value $18,000 - UP
