Theodosius II, AD 402-450. Gold Solidus (4.49 g.). Mint of Constantinople, AD 426-30. Helmeted and cuirassed bust three-quarter face to r. holding spear and shield. Reverse: SALVS REI PVBLICAE A (officinea A). Theodosius and a shorter figure of Valentinian, both nimbate, are enthroned facing side by side. S-21144; DO 374-6 (officinae not listed). Boldly struck on a broad flan with full legends. A beautiful lustrous example. Mint State. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
This issue celebrates the joint consulship of Theodosius and Valentinian (twelfth and second respectively in 426.) The younger is shown as Augustus (shorter) and co-emperor enthroned beside his eastern colleague.
