1839 N-8 R1 Head of 1840. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. CAC Approved. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate brown faded down from mint red with mellowed red showing through in the fields and protected areas. Ample mint red remains to suggest this piece is close to deserving a "Red & Brown" designation. A truly beautiful, nearly flawless cent that offers exceptional eye appeal. The only marks are a small area of slightly darker toning nestled into the depression right of the Y in LIBERTY, a tiny nick in the center of the cheek, a short swipe of darker toning between the C & A in AMERICA, and a tiny planchet flake (as struck) left of the first S in STATES. Sharply struck E-MDS. The fields are smooth and the portrait is covered with fine concentric pantograph lines. A premium example of the Head of 1840 type. Called MS65 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21907. Our grade is MS65. The only superior example known was a PCGS MS66RB, lot 456 in our 2/1/2009 sale of the Naftzger collection, and it brought $34,500 at the auction.
