Lot 80

1794 S-42 R4 VG8. A couple points sharper but there is very fine granularity under glossy dark olive brown toning. The highpoints of the devices are smooth and are toned a lighter shade of steel brown. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a dull nick in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY and a tiny rim bruise over the O in OF. Struck from dies that were axially misaligned (the die faces were not perfectly parallel) causing weakness on the 179 and the opposing STATES. The date and STATES are weak but readable and everything else is clear. Estimated Value $400-UP

Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/18/2002:1121-Ed Miller Collection.

Realized $423
