John Pine (1690-1756). [The Spanish Armada Entering the English Channel, 1588]. Plate VI from Pine's The Tapestry Hangings of the House of lords Representing the several Engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets, in the ever memorable Year 1588…London: John Pine, 24 June 1739. Drawn by Clement Lemprière, engraved and published by Pine. Engraved plate printed in blue, within a decorative border drawn printed from a second plate. Plate size: 14¾ x 23¾ in. Matted and framed to 23½ x 33½ in. Very good condition; not examined out of frame. The print shows the Spanish Armada anchored off Dover, with the English blocking their retreat. In the decorative border are eight roundel portraits of the English commanders. The depiction is from one of ten tapestries commissioned from the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom by Lord Howard of Effingham in 1591 to commemorate the defeat of the Armada. Unfortunately, they were destroyed when the Houses of Parliament burned down in 1834, leaving Pine's book as the only record.
Estimated Value $700 - 900.
